Exercise doesn't help depression, study concludes -
A study into whether physical activity alleviates the symptoms of depression has found there is no benefit.
Research published in the British Medical Journal suggests that adding a physical activity intervention to usual care did not reduce symptoms of depression more than usual care alone.
This contrasts with current clinical guidance which recommends exercise to help those suffering from the mental illness, which affects one in six adults in Britain at any one time.I thought this was true and all - fuck yeah, randomised controlled trials!
i’m waiting for the study that proves that yoga at sunrise actually makes depression worse
I KNEW IT. WHEN I WAS 15 MY MOM MADE ME WALK A MILE WITH HER EVERY MORNING ALL SUMMER AND IT MADE ME FEEL WORSE.
Huh this is quite interesting! I have had so many people tell me that exercise will help my depression, and I have to say, it’s not something I’ve noticed happening, although I run daily and practice karate.
I think it has been helpful for me in that those two activities are really enjoyable (at times) and they make me feel like I’m achieving something when I’ve screwed up everything else in my life.
But if exercising is a complete misery for someone, I don’t know exactly how it’s supposed to make them feel any better…

on one hand i want a nightwing movie, but on the other hand i know they’d totally prob fuck him up and try to make him ~gritty~ like batman
i think id just really like them to start with a super gritty voice over and the actor portraying dick grayson doing the gargling-marbles christopher nolan batman voice
then just have him choke and cough and be like “how does he do that for more than fifteen minutes a night, jesus christ-“
begin nightwing movie~

“if i’m a person of color, i’m allowed to hate white people!!!!’
“if i’m gay, i’m allowed to hate straight people!!!!”
“if i’m a woman, i’m allowed to hate men!!!”
“if i’m trans*, i’m allowed to hate cis people!!!”
ok
The problem with this post is that is poses PoC anger, queer anger, women’s anger and trans* anger as being equal and reactive to white anger, straight anger, men’s anger and cis anger. They are not.
In a stratified society like most everyone on Tumblr lives in, there are uneven power relationships between groups which mean that you cannot just ‘flip’ negative behaviour and say it’s ‘just as bad’. This is because only one group in that relationship has the power to enact their hate on a society-wide level.
Like for example in New Zealand, where I live, most people are white, and a lot of them are racist towards Māori people. We get stereotyped as lazy and violent. A lot of white people don’t like us, and because they’re the dominant group in society, a consequence of that is discrimination in jobs, welfare, education, and all of those discriminations build up together and lead to a host of social ills.
All of them come from that dominant group in society hating Māori. When I’m with Māori friends and am frustrated by something, and I say ‘Aaaugh fuck, I just seriously cannot fucking deal with white people this week’ and my friends say ‘Ugh yeah seriously’ there are literally no consequences for white people. We don’t have the social capital to take that dislike and use it to fuck up white communities. When white people get together with their friends and say ‘Aaaugh fuck, I just cannot fucking deal with Māoris this week’ and their friends say ‘Ugh yeah seriously’ there are fucking drastic consequences for Māori communities because that racial discourse perpetuates negative stereotypes of us and creates an atmosphere where it’s okay for white people to treat us poorly for our ethnicity.
It’s the same (well really it’s very similar) for queer people. If a bunch of queer people are saying ‘Ugh man I am seriously sick of having to deal with straight people’ nothing happens to straight people. When a bunch of straight people are saying ‘Ugh man I am seriously sick of having to deal with the gays’ then people start dying.
Marginalised people fundamentally lack the power, as a group, to hurt privileged communities. When we say we hate them, we’re venting. When they say they hate us, they’re cementing their position at the top.

Hulkeye's Nest: morpheusnyx: windexwaker: captain-jack-hardness: i hate black... -
i hate black girls
the sentence above is racist, but if you replace black girls with white girls you get a funny 1000+ note text post instead
fuck, its finally time someone pointed this out
okay, but saying you hate black…
okay, i think you’re right about ignoring the effects on individuals. and also about trying to be nice to people!
i just think that the two different posts, for example, can’t be legitimately equated. that doesn’t make what you’re saying about a “white girls” post less accurate, but the two are on different levels, with different social context.
